  16. <p>An "intimate relationship" leads to an Archbishop's fall
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     The 1988 installation of Eugene Marino as U.S. Roman
  19. Catholicism's first black Archbishop was a proud moment for
  20. Atlanta and the church. But last May the Archbishop, 56,
  21. suddenly went on leave; a spokesman blamed "cardiac stress" and
  22. exhaustion. In July, Marino became one of the few Archbishops
  23. ever to resign, saying he needed "spiritual renewal,
  24. psychological therapy and medical supervision." Last week,
  25. however, the archdiocese confirmed reports that the real problem
  26. was Marino's involvement with Vicki Long, 27, through most of
  27. his brief reign.

  29. <p>     James Lyke, a black bishop from Cleveland whom the Pope made
  30. interim administrator of the archdiocese, told reporters of an
  31. "intimate relationship," but a colleague was blunter with the
  32. Atlanta Constitution: "Love got the best of him." The
  33. entanglement was bizarre because the year before the Archbishop
  34. came to town, Long had filed a $2.3 million paternity suit
  35. against a Georgia priest. Long, an active Catholic and
  36. Eucharistic minister living in suburban Riverdale, is described
  37. as a singer. Though blood tests ruled out the priest's
  38. paternity, the Savannah diocese reportedly agreed to give Long
  39. financial support. The case is still pending.

  41. <p>     Breaking the scandal, Atlanta's WAGA-TV reported that Marino
  42. and Long attended social functions together and that Marino
  43. named Long as beneficiary in a flight-insurance policy. WAGA-TV
  44. also said Marino helped Long buy a house and paid her $1,500
  45. a month in living expenses. Although Marino's pay is $1,500 a
  46. month, Lyke assured Catholics that "no church money has been
  47. used" to aid Long, except for unspecified amounts for medical
  48. bills. The relationship is over, said Lyke, who offered no
  49. details on a new legal claim by Long against the church.

  51. <p>     In a fast-track career, Marino was the first black to hold
  52. the No. 2 post in a religious order, and then he became
  53. auxiliary bishop of Washington. Lyke said a tip to the Vatican
  54. pro-nuncio last April led to a church investigation and
  55. Marino's resignation. Though Lyke defended church officials'
  56. performance, the cover-up does little to inspire confidence,
  57. and the episode again raises questions about celibacy.
  58. Moreover, the loss of Marino is a serious blow for a church
  59. eager to stem alienation among blacks.
